Globe trotters around the world fell in love with Chicago six years ago and their love for this city is stronger than ever. What do we mean by that? Well, it turns out Chicago was voted for the sixth time in a row the best big city in the U.S. by the prestigious Conde Nast Traveller readers. One can’t avoid adding this world-famous city to their bucket list for 2023.
Americans nicknamed this place “The Windy City” as frigid breezes blow off Lake Michigan and sweep around the city’s streets. But do not get scared, just take your favourite jacket so you can stroll around this unique city. Where to?
Chicago is famous for so many things, so it’s hard to choose just a few. Tourists get here usually at O’Hare Airport which is known to be one of the best-connected airports in the world. Public transportation is great and one of the best ones is the L train which is also easy to use. Of course, for those who love driving, you should know Route 66 starts here.
Even though you will rush to Millenium Park to take a selfie with the Bean, the emblematic public sculpture by Anish Kapoor, you should know there is much more than that.
Among the many places you could visit in Chicago, the most popular ones are The Art Institute of Chicago and the Field Museum both dating back to the 19th century. Other places not to be missed are the Adler Planetarium, a museum dedicated to astronomy and astrophysics, as well as the Shedd Aquarium, which opened in 1930 and was for some time the largest indoor public aquarium in the world.
For adventure seekers, bicycles can be rented all over the city and you cannot miss the Chicago Lakefront trail which has a total length of 18 miles. If you are about to arrive at the Willis Tower, a good idea is to leave your bike safe and go up to the 103rd floor and experience the most famous Skydeck in the U.S. Some say the best thing you can do is to catch the sunset, but you shouldn’t trust them and try it yourself.
If you’re ready to dip into your savings, take a walk on the Magnificent Mile, the premier commercial district in the city. If you get lost, you should know it will take some time to get back home as this area extends a full square mile, encompassing 13 block stretch of North Michigan Avenue.
After such an adventurous day, why not learn something more about local cuisine? Did you know that brownies were invented in Chicago? And you can taste it all around the city, as Chicago is known to make gourmands feel like home. The worldwide known Chicago-style hot dog figures in every menu, the Deep-Dish Pizza keeps tourists coming back, and let’s not forget about the Chicago barbeque or the Jibarito Sandwich.
In the evening, you can dive into the Theatre District, where over 250 theatres welcome you in downtown Chicago. There is no dress code here, so you can relax and enjoy a classic play or a modern one, as there are plenty of choices. Music lovers? We did not forget about you and we are sure you will enjoy an evening surrounded by jazz or improvised shows in local bars such as B.L.U.E.S., Green Mill or Kingston Miles.
